What this Program is all about

Shvuayim is first and foremost about having a great time and an unforgettable experience. We’ve also set several goals for what we hope you’ll get out of coming on Shvuayim:

Poverty – you will create an active connection to the ideas of tzedek and chesed through learning about low-income communities and the realities of being poor

How to Respond – you will see the way many different group respond to the problem of American poverty

Our Own Ethics – you will gain increased consideration of others different from you and their feelings and will become more sensitive to how we treat each other (both inside and outside our immediate community) bein adam lachavero.

What Will We Do Next? – you’ll go back to your community and take an active role in chesed activities.

What did you learn from participating in Shvuayim?

“I learned how much I can make a difference. I learned the power of a simple ‘hello’ for a person who is usually shunned. I learned to appreciate my own life and luxuries much more. When I worry about brand names, others are worrying about food for dinner. I also learned how important it is to treat people with dignity and not judge people solely on how they look or what they have. I gained a larger perspective and a greater awareness to the world around me and I learned I have a place in the greater world.”

- Avi Miller, Shvuayim 2004
